According to data obtained by CBS News from the US Department of Homeland Security, there are approximately 42,000 people in ICE's detention centers with 38,521 beds. The number of people detained in a single day under President Donald Trump's administration has reached one thousand, while during the final year of the Biden administration, the average number was 312 per day. The Trump administration broadened ICE detention center powers by lifting some restrictions imposed during the Biden era, allowing for the pursuit of a majority of undocumented individuals in the US, including those with no criminal record. ICE officials stated that the capacity of detention centers needs to be increased due to the large number of undocumented immigrants being detained. The agency is exploring various solutions, such as collaborating with authorities and requesting more funding from Congress. ICE, with a capacity exceeding 109%, released approximately 160 individuals on February 3rd, some of whom were fitted with electronic ankle monitors for tracking purposes. Detainees can be held for days, weeks, or even months until all necessary documentation and legal processes for deportation are completed. Some undocumented immigrants cannot be deported as their home countries refuse to accept them. Trump announced that he would abolish the provision granting automatic citizenship to immigrant children born in the US after his inauguration on January 20, and he emphasized the need to reinterpret the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which grants this right. Trump also revealed the elimination of the 'CBP One' program, which provided legal avenues for migration, in efforts to curb illegal immigration at the border. To enhance security measures at the US-Mexico border, Trump signed a new presidential decree and decided to deploy an additional 1,500 troops to the border. The Trump administration granted extensive powers to multiple federal agencies, such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the US Marshals Service (USMS) under the Department of Justice, to intensify efforts to deport immigrants.
