39-year-old Howells lost a legal battle against Newport City Council last month in the UK High Court, failing to gain permission to search the landfill site. However, the decision to close the landfill by the council has added a new dimension to the process. Howells expressed surprise at the council's decision to close the site, stating that the closure would cause great harm to the people of Newport. The council has obtained planning permissions to convert part of the area into a solar energy plant, making it even more difficult to find the lost Bitcoins. Howells accidentally placed the hard drive containing his Bitcoin wallet in a trash bag at his home entrance in the summer of 2013. His partner at the time mistakenly thought it was trash and took the bag to the landfill. Since then, Howells has made numerous requests to the council to help him find the hard drive, even offering to share a portion of the found money with them. However, the Newport City Council rejected this request, stating that anything dumped in the landfill now belongs to the council. Judge Keyser KC also ruled in favor of the council, stating that Howells has no right to search. While council officials have not made any new statements on the matter, Howells is considering purchasing the landfill by meeting with investors.
