Fox News' report mentioned that irregular migrants were attempting to cross the Rio Grande River at the Mexico border. It was alleged that around 2:00 PM local time, shots were fired at the security forces patrolling the border, supposedly by members of Mexican cartels. Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin also shared on social media that he received information from security sources in the area that armed cartel members opened fire at border security forces, with no injuries reported. On the other hand, NBC News confirmed that the Texas Department of Public Safety acknowledged shots fired at security forces on the Mexico border. Following the inauguration ceremony at the U.S. Congress on January 20, Trump announced the removal of the 'CBP One' program, which allowed legal immigration to the country. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was granted the authority on January 22 to arrest irregular migrants within or around sensitive areas like churches, hospitals, and schools. Trump's administration signed a new executive order to increase security measures at the U.S.-Mexico border and decided to send an additional 1500 troops to the border. In order to enhance efforts to deport migrants, Trump's administration granted expanded powers to multiple federal agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS).
