Experts issue urgent call for action as gambling becomes a global epidemic
The increasing prevalence of gambling due to the widespread use of mobile phones and the internet has become a global concern, with approximately 450 million people worldwide experiencing behavioral problems associated with gambling. At least 80 million individuals are struggling with 'gambling disorder,' a mental health issue characterized by persistent and recurrent betting despite negative consequences. Experts warn that online gambling platforms and sports betting are contributing to the rise in gambling addiction, leading to not only financial losses but also physical and mental health issues, domestic violence, suicide risk, increased crime rates, and job losses. Particularly vulnerable groups, such as youth and children, are being exposed to gambling advertisements, making them more susceptible to the harmful effects of gambling. Urgent measures are needed to address this growing global problem before it escalates further.
