Aaron James, 46, was injured in an accident while working on a high voltage line in 2021, losing a major part of his face. James also underwent a partial face transplant surgery, a procedure performed on very few people. Researchers at New York University's Langone Health Medical Center say that the transplanted eye has maintained normal pressure and blood flow. Similarly, in animals that underwent eye transplants, it was observed that the donor eye shrank after the operation. However, James did not regain vision in the donor eye. His eye doctor, Vaidehi Dedania, expressed admiration for the progress James has made post-surgery. The researchers highlighted the extraordinary results obtained after the operation, indicating that the findings could inspire further research into transplants of critical sensory organs. The specialists conducted an electroretinography test to measure the electrical response of the retina to light in the transplanted eye, which showed that the light-sensitive nerve cells in the donor eye remained functional after the transplant. They hope that this outcome brings hope for restoring vision through eye transplants in the future. James did not lose his right eye during the accident and underwent a 21-hour surgery in May, with over 140 healthcare workers participating. The donated face and eye came from a male donor in his 30s. During the surgery, doctors injected adult stem cells taken from the donor's bone marrow into the optic nerve to strengthen the repair process. Medical research on James's recovery process highlights significant milestones such as eating solid foods and regaining the ability to smell. Speaking about his recovery process, James said, 'I am almost back to being a regular guy, able to do standard things.' The retired military officer became the 19th person in the US to undergo a face transplant and the first person to receive a full eye transplant. Eye transplant surgeries pose many challenges due to the complex structure and functions of this sensory organ. Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, Director of the University's Face Transplant Program, stated that they are focusing on understanding how to restore James's vision through the transplant.
