Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun newspapers based in Japan have jointly announced that they have filed a total of approximately $30 million in damages against the US-based artificial intelligence initiative Perplexity AI for alleged copyright infringement. Perplexity AI is accused of using artificial intelligence to generate news responses since June 2024, stating false information as if it were true while citing the newspapers' names or news as sources, thereby damaging the newspapers' reputation. The New York Times, one of the leading newspapers in the US, had also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft on December 27, 2023, alleging unauthorized use of their work for training artificial intelligence technologies and copyright infringement.
