The family of Durham, especially their 15-year-old daughter, demanded the dismissal of police officer Alexander Bookman. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced that 26-year-old officer Bookman was placed on paid administrative leave regarding the incident on November 12th and an internal investigation was being conducted. Police stated that Durham had called 911 reporting that two people were shooting outside and trying to break into his home. When the police arrived at the scene, they noticed parked cars with broken windows and damage to the house. Hearing screams coming from inside, the police officer kicked in the front door. Body camera footage released by the police shows officer Bookman walking inside the house with his gun drawn, hearing yelling and noises from outside. When he turned a corner, the officer saw Durham struggling with 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux wearing a ski mask and holding a knife. After shouting "Drop the knife, drop the knife!" for a few seconds, Bookman fired at Durham. Durham and Boudreaux fell to the ground. The officer then fired five more shots at Durham, telling him to "Raise your hands!" Durham lost his life at the scene. Boudreaux was arrested and charged with conducting a home invasion with deadly weapons. The family's attorney demanded an immediate arrest warrant for officer Bookman. David Roger, the vice president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, stated, "Although Durham's death is tragic, officer Bookman was performing his duty and did not aim to commit a crime." This incident brought police violence back into the spotlight just days after Sonya Massey was killed by a police officer in Illinois.
