Meta to Pay Trump $25 Million

According to The Wall Street Journal, unnamed sources revealed details of the agreement between Trump and Meta. The sources stated that Meta agreed to pay approximately 25 million dollars in relation to the lawsuit filed by Trump regarding the closure of his Facebook account. Sources mentioned that 22 million dollars of the payment from Meta will be used for Trump's 'presidential library,' with the remaining amount allocated to 'other individuals involved in the lawsuit' and legal fees. Despite the agreement, sources claimed that Meta 'did not admit the allegations.' NBC News reported that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, notified the federal court of the agreement reached in the lawsuit. Meta's Communications Director Andy Stone confirmed the terms of the agreement involving the payment of 25 million dollars. In July 2021, Trump announced that he would sue Facebook, Twitter (now known as X), and Google, the owner of YouTube, for censoring him after the Capitol riot. Trump stated that he would demand the 'disgraceful censorship of the American people' to stop and referred to these social media companies as the 'de facto censorship arm of the U.S. government.' Social media platforms Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook froze Trump's accounts on January 6, 2021, due to his alleged role in the Capitol riot and claims of electoral fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The companies later permanently suspended Trump's accounts on these platforms. On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-US President Donald Trump staged a protest in Washington's National Mall alleging election fraud in the November 3, 2020 elections. Following the march, far-right groups and Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building where the session to certify the election results was taking place. The violent insurrection resulted in the deaths of 5 individuals, including a police officer. Approximately 1500 people were prosecuted on various charges related to the Capitol riot.
