Copernicus Climate Change Service data shows that last month, the global average surface air temperature was the second warmest May on record, reaching 15.79 degrees, 0.53 degrees above the May average from 1991-2020. May 2025 was 0.12 degrees cooler than May 2024, when the temperature record was broken, and 0.06 degrees warmer than the third warmest May in 2020. The global temperature for the pre-industrial period was higher by 1.4 degrees, breaking the 22-month streak of temperatures being 1.5 degrees above the period average. Spring 2025, covering March-May, saw the second highest global average temperature, 0.59 degrees above the 1991-2020 average. The average sea surface temperature in May was measured at 20.79 degrees, making it the second highest May sea temperature, 0.14 degrees lower than in May 2024. Most of Northern and Central Europe, as well as southern regions of Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey experienced drier than average conditions in May. Northwest Europe saw the lowest rainfall and soil moisture levels since 1979. Prof. Dr. Levent Kurnaz stated that while 2025 has had the second hottest days recorded historically, a global record-breaking hot day in the summer is unlikely. He mentioned that Turkey saw cool weather in April due to significant frost events. Predictions indicate that the summer temperatures will not be as high as in 2023 and 2024 due to the absence of El Nino's warm influence. Despite this, 2025 is expected to be the third hottest year, still warmer than average.
