According to a report in The Guardian, details about the artificial intelligence-supported system called Immigration Application Determination and Prioritization (IPIC) have started to emerge. The AI system will make decisions regarding asylum claims, refugee situations, and rights based on identity, criminal records, race, religion, and health information of the asylum seekers. The use of AI systems to process the backlog of thousands of pending asylum applications, including those of 41,000 migrants facing deportation orders, has raised concerns among refugee and migrant rights organizations. The privacy violations investigated by the civil society organization Privacy International warn that files reviewed by the IPIC system may be approved without examination by Home Office officials, posing a risk. Privacy International lawyer Jonah Mendelsohn raised concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability in the algorithm used by the system, stating that without updates to ensure transparency and accountability, injustices in the immigration system will continue. Fizza Qureshi, Director of the Migration Rights Network, highlighted the potential bias of the IPIC system, noting that it will require a vast amount of information, leading to increased data sharing with other government agencies, raising concerns about surveillance and privacy violations for migrants. Madeleine Sumption, Director of the Migration Observatory at Oxford University, emphasized the speed at which AI systems can process asylum claims, reducing uncertainty for applicants, but stressed the importance of transparency.
